Strolling around the alt.food.sushi newsgroup, I found a tutorial for making sushi. This is a great how-to for beginners wanting to learn how to make sushi and enjoy it at the comforts of their own home. Its incredibly affordable and easy to do. Learning to make sushi at home is a great way to show off to all your friends too.
this from rec.food.cooking just a couple of days ago…poor Frank G. was broke, in Germany on a Sunday (where they apparently also do not have grocery on Sundays) and had 30 minutes to make a fab dinner for a date….
SUBJECT: help!
Hi!
Shops are closed today (Germany! – forgot to go shopping yesterday) and
a girlfriend wants to come for a visit in half an hour and I just got:
5 potatoes,
3 onions,
3 tomatoes,
a citron,
3 apples,
3/4 cucumber,
1/2 camembert,
a tin of sardines,
1/3 package spiral pasta and half a package of sweet cream.
Also some sweet mustard, butter, olive oil, some herbs and spices.
Any idea?
Thanx
–
Frank G
Luckily for Frank, within a few minutes a fellow netizen posted:
Boil pasta
Saute onions in oil, add sardines, some of the cream and some herbs,
perhaps some mustard.
Toss pasta in onion/sardine/cream sauce.
Plate pasta.
Dice tomatoes, strew on top of pasta.
For dessert, bake apples with some shredded citron, butter, sugar and
spice; top with remaining cream.
In the end all worked out great for Frank!
Just wanted to say ‘Thank You!’ for your help yesterday evening (UTC+1).
In the end we were cooking together!
Your ideas inspired us for the following dinner:
Salad:
Tomatoes, cucumber and camembert with a vinaigrette made of white
balsamico, mustard, salt, coloured pepper, dill, parsley and olive oil.
On top some diced toast fried in butter.
Pasta:
In butter sauted onions, salt, white pepper, thymian, honey and sweet
cream with the spiral pasta plated. On top breaded and fried sardines.
Decorated with a piece of citron and parsley.
Dessert:
‘S Viemeister’s baked apples’ filled with raisins, honey and butter,
some citron and cinnamon. There was no cream left, so we served it with
some cherry jam.
First we had some pinot grigio and later mocca and cognac
In the end it was a nice evening!!!
Thank you!
(Need to go shopping now…)

Speaking as one who owns a smartphone and did some awesome shopping over Thanksgiving on the infamous Black Friday – it is totally incredible to be able to shop around with ease and all on the fly to find the hottest deal – everyone knows where I am going with this, the all to amazing Barcode scanning apps – Like IOS’s ShopSavey. The power of the barcode in concert with the internet allows us to find any item’s description, best price, and nearest location where we can find the item all with a quick snapshot with our phone’s built in megapixel camera.
A group call the Consortium for the Barcode for Life is putting together an extensive and very impressive database of 5 million DNA sequences cataloging over 500 thousand unique species. Next time you go to your favorite 5 star fine dining restaurant and you order fresh catch Salmon, a DNA barcode could be used to identify that you are indeed getting and eating the real thing. These DNA barcodes could also be used to identify fake or knock off herbal medicines and offer you a full proof guarantee that you are getting the real stuff. The applications for this are awesome have many possibilities – who knows…maybe one day you will have to pass a DNA barcode scan to get a driver’s license – big brother here we come
A group of some of our favorite celebs have gotten together to take action and put an end to FAMINE, a man made problem that every human being would agree should not exist today – it’s 2011 F**K Really? Go to one.org – stop FAMINE today.
This past weekend was a time of the all too familiar United States flags flying in the breeze and the sounds of thunderous booms and brilliant bright sparkles of light scattered throughout the sky as families came together in love and fellowship united and strong to celebrate the lives and memories of the United States heroes who have made this amazingly awesome country of ours alive, thriving and possible. Tis true that the 4th of July has become a day of family fun, massive exploding Chinese surprises, and finger licking oh so sticky and delicious barbeque, but it is important to remember the reason why we all get together on the forth of July. We come together to celebrate the ideas that our great nation was founded upon, the freedom to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Many brave men and women have given their lives for these ideas because they believed in something far greater than themselves and they loved their country far more than they loved themselves. These men and women are the real American Heroes…God Bless America!
what should i eat? my favourite food is eggs. that’s right. there is nothing better. i like them fried. i take three eggs, crack them, put them onto a plate. i get the cast iron pan going at medium high. when the pan is hot, i drop down the temp to 2; a good low heat. i then add a tablespoon of butter to the pan. when it’s melted and sizzly, i add the eggs. then i wait until they are done; (note that i put a lid on the pan) and when they are half way between runny and hard, i’ll serve them. with some crappy white bread. prime rib might be a tad better, but for economy and taste, i’ll take the eggs.
Check out rec.food.recipes. Hundreds of recipes including this yummy looking tidbit:
RATTLE SNAKE PASTA
1 pound linguine
8 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour
1/2 cup parmesan cheese
2 cups heavy cream
1 red pepper (sliced thin)
2 tablespoons red onion (chopped finely)
2 tablespoons green onion (chopped finely)
1 yellow pepper (sliced thin)
Garlic (to taste)
1 1/2 pounds chicken cut thinly (or cubed)
Cilantro (to taste. Note: I don’t use it cause it over powers so I put in a pinch of dry cilantro mix)
1 tablespoon cumin
1 teaspoon red cayenne
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
A couple of splashes of lime juice
I cook the chicken in oil garlic and butter, and then put to the side. I then melt 2 tablespoons of better in the pan over low heat (I do not let it
brown) and add 2 big scoops of flour (also, not let to brown). I work in the rest of the butter and cream then add the cheese and the seasonings.
Then I combine the chicken with the peppers, onions, garlic and lime. I simmer low then cook and add the pasta.
Sadly, no actual rattlesnake, although I bet you could substitute it in for the chicken. It all tastes like chicken anyway right?
