iPad 3 Just Around the Corner

Apple iPad 3Apple has confirmed just today that they will be unveiling “Something you can see and touch.” Along with the invites to the event on March 7th (where the heck is our invite – C’Mon Apple what gives?) at 10AM PT, 1PM EST in San Fran CA, Apple sent along a photo (pictured on the right) of what definitely looks like an iPad. We are tingling with anticipation to see what improvements have been made if it is indeed an iPad, Can anyone say Retina Display, bigger screen, maybe a little 4G LTE… One thing is for sure Apple has not ever been known to disappoint and we know this will be no exception, so tighten your boot strap and buckle because we are in for something totally awesome…

Life In a Barcode

Speaking as one who owns a smartphone and did some awesome shopping over Thanksgiving on the infamous Black Friday – it is totally incredible to be able to shop around with ease and all on the fly to find the hottest deal – everyone knows where I am going with this, the all to amazing Barcode scanning apps – Like  IOS’s ShopSavey.  The power of the barcode in concert with the internet allows us to find any item’s description, best price, and nearest location where we can find the item all with a quick snapshot with our phone’s built in megapixel camera.
A group call the Consortium for the Barcode for Life is putting together an extensive and very impressive database of 5 million DNA sequences cataloging over 500 thousand unique species. Next time you go to your favorite 5 star fine dining restaurant and you order fresh catch Salmon, a DNA barcode could be used to identify that you are indeed getting and eating the real thing.  These DNA barcodes could also be used to identify fake or knock off herbal medicines and offer you a full proof guarantee that you are getting the real stuff. The applications for this are awesome have many possibilities – who knows…maybe one day you will have to pass a DNA barcode scan to get a driver’s license – big brother here we come :)

20 Years Ago Today The World’s Most Popular Free OS Was Born (Linix) Right on the Usenet

Linus Torvalds was really bored one evening and was looking for something to create, something that would be free that could be shared everywhere. Being an avid programer and geek extraordinaire he decided he might want to try his hand at improving the operating system mini unix or (minix), he had already seen the desktop market flooded by Microsoft Windows and Steve Jobs at Apple had created the Mac OS operating system – Linus wanted to create something anyone could use that would be cool and free, thus one night, exactly 20 years ago today Linix was born with a short but amazingly significant post to the Usenet newsgroup comp.os.minix asking, “What would you like to see most in minix?” Little did Linus know that such a simple query would lead to such an explosive out pouring of ideas creating a bubble of inovation that still continues to grow today. What began as a little hobby for a super geek, would soon become what some techno geeks might argue was the achievement of a lifetime, the creation and growth of the Linix kernel – the core and brain of the free Linux operating system that makes it go. Today Linix is made up of contributions from 1000s of other computer geeks that share Linus’s passion for computers and making them go. Some may even refer to Linus Torvalds as the father of the open source software movement because he created a culture where other coders could be open to create and share and build something great together, something they could look back on and say, “Hey we did that, and boy was that cool!” Today Linix is made up of contributions from folks everywhere, I bet Linus had no idea that one little Usenet post was going to spark the growth of one of the neatest most collaborative free software movements ever. Thanks Linus – we love you for incredible and free software :)

Batteries On The Go

University of Wisconsin scientists have created a device that can store a charge as we move so that we can have power on the go to create and share.

Could cell phone batteries be a thing of the past? Well a team of mechanical engineers at the University of Winconsin says, “You Betcha!” Well, not exactly in those words, we are paraphrasing a little :) But the team has created a magic device that stores up a charge just by the user walking around and doing their everyday stuff. The charge that is created and stored in the user’s shoes is enough to power a laptop or a even a mobile phone. Until now, engineers have not been able to create enough power to make our larger more fun power hungry devices go. With these new charging devices you may soon be working off those extra pounds and recharging your iPod at the same time as you can as the power will grow and flow as you move down the street.

Rubber Goes Big – Super Hero Like Even!

Remember how we all used to play with silly puddy and how awesome that was? – Well apparently so do some super clever techno geeks at Boston’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). These techno gurus have put rubber and a special paint together so that the rubber can be stuck to anything and magnify the object on the micron level making it possible to see detail smaller than the width of a human hair. The rubber is super cool (Called GelSight) as it sucks up everything it sticks to and creates a picture because the paint on the rubber uses little pieces of super tiny metal to fill in the gaps – the result is a well formed 3D metallic looking image that is easily visible by shining a light that reflects off the metallic image. From there the image can be examined with even more incredible detail using computer scanning technology – this could be used for medical discoveries as we can see things we could not see before, or it could be used for tracking down the bad guys, when examining bullets and matching them to a perpetrators gun. The most amazing thing about this new rubber is the level of detail and the fact that there would no longer be a need for big bulky equipment :) Check out the video below. Great job MIT :)

Doctor Who’s Darkest Yet Finest Hour

Doctor Who-vians and enthusiasts alike get ready for a super tardis time warp as Doctor Who and his group of brave time traveling companions take an asteroid by storm to rescue their ever so awesomely cool and attractive companion Amy Pond who if you remember was turned into a very lovely bubbly pile of goo in the last episode, and her baby from a group of overzealous trigger happy marines who are just itching to take the doctor out. The marines who are under the impression the doctor is some kind of evil war lord are ready to go at a moments notice. Doctor Who of course being who he is, it should come as no surprise to everyone that the Doctor already knew what was going on and was prepared for them :) Doctor Who and his clever companions manage to take them by surprise and disarm the whole crew without any harm coming to anyone including a group of monks whose heads were gone yet they somehow still managed to engage in a light saber battle that would make the Jedi look like gnomes. After a doctor Who special – aka massive takeover – Doctor Who and friends seize the base. Doctor Who and Rorie arrive just in time to save and the baby but with a surprising twist, we discover that Amy’s baby is already gone replaced by a gooey baby instead :) In yet another asteroid quaking moment we find out that at the end of the episode Amy’s baby is none other than the Doctor’s wife! :) If you want to know what happens you’ll be waiting a long time because the Doctor and crew are going on a little space hiatus in the tardis for the next few months so don’t hold your breathe to long or you might pass out! If you haven’t heard of Doctor Who before be sure to give him a go, join in all the hair raising time traveling adventures on iTunes – you will not be disappointed :)

Oldies But Goodies Get a New Facelift in 3D as They Join the World of Nintendo 3DS

Earlier at a gaming expo during the Gamers convention E3 2011 Nintendo gurus unveiled some exciting new mind blowing renditions of some of the coolest titles Nintendo has under its belt. These titles include the fierce heroic bravery of our old friend link in some new 3DS and Wii additions of our old favorite franchise Zelda. Face melting demos literally explode on the screen with stunning new 3D versions of our favorite Zelda characters and monsters. When the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D hits shelves on June 19 many Heros, myself included, will be looking forward to diving right in swords at the ready.

Oh my fellow Nintendo connoisseurs the fun does does not stop there – you better make sure your sitting down for this one – our two favorite plumber brothers Mario and Luigi have been rejuvenated and invigorated into a whole new fantabulous 3D world constructed from scratch. Mario literally comes to life in your hands as you go down pipes that seem to jump out at you and as you skillfully dodge turtles that look like they are going to hit you square in the face, the 3D is amazing! None of our Mario Bros. favorites have been overlooked. This is truly a masterful redesign of Mario Bros. from the ground up and Mario and Luigi are looking real good in 3D!

Lastly it’s time to throw on your helmet and get geared up for a fast heart pumping hair blowing ride down memory lane with ExciteBike 3D. It’s sure to satisfy the needs of the most adrenaline crazed junkies and low riders alike. Get ready to rocket your bike into thin air as you and your bike reach a whole new level in 3D, from the looks of things this new addition is a great homage to the early Excitebike and will not dare disappoint!

This year at E3 Nintendo’s developers packed a real wallop and blew up the 3DS world with some oldies, but goodies – in fact some would argue possiblly the very best. Nice job Nintendo we salute you!
